This is a truly beautiful piece of antique mourning jewellery in this finely crafted Victorian mourning ring from 1896. The front beaded face is set with 12 small pearls in the shape of two flowers and leaves each with a single Rose cut diamond to the centre and a black enamel background.

The face is crafted between further black enamel shoulders which leads onto a plain gold shank complete with the original hallmarking showing the ring to have been assayed in Chester in 1896 and made from 15 Carat Gold. There are no personal dates or initials any part of the ring which makes this a piece of jewellery that can become something personal to yourself and although no longer in use, there is a rare hidden compartment panel to the inner back of the shank which can if desired contain your own keepsake such as hair as was the intended use for this ring in the victorian era. This will need attention from a jeweller to add a quartz (transparent) panel in order to contain your contents and the price reflects this missing element. The ring has been cleaned and polished as the remaining woven hair was spoiled. This masterpiece of a mourning ring is fully hallmarked for 15 Karat gold Chester, 1896 with the Makers Mark: WGM for Walter George Matthews, listed as a jeweller at 16 Upper Hockley Street, Birmingham.

It is in good condition for the age the only point to mention is a small loss of enamel to the small areas on the shoulders. The head measures approx 7mm wide The shank is approx 3.5mm Wide. All of my photos and videos are shot using natural light only. (Window light) so to show the diamonds true colour.

The use of LED and flashlights in photos bleach diamonds an artificial "white" which is why I avoid using them. As always, the diamonds have been tested for authenticity with two electronic diamond testers. No wear to the setting or band/shank. Crisp beading to the mount edges.

Pearls still have lustre and shine, the hallmarks are crisp and legible. The two diamonds are intact and have no major chips or damage.

Other than a minor amount of wear to some small areas of the enamel, the ring is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned and polished. When browsing for a vintage ring be sure that the ring is authentic and that you are working with a reputable dealer. There are a lot of vintage style designs on the market that are made to look like old rings but they're simply vintage/antique inspired and nearly always made from lab grown gems (not natural or earth mined) which are worth a few dollars each. Be sure to ask the dealer if their designs are authentic vintage/antique. Old rings can increase in value over time whereas re-creations do not!

Ring Size = 8 / P Weight 3.3 Grams Hallmarks: Fully Hallmarked. The ring will be sent in a little oriental style satin purse. The item "Victorian (1896) 15ct Gold Black Enamel Diamond Mourning Ring Valued £850" is in sale since Tuesday, October 22, 2019.
