Antique Victorian mourning ring, Black enamel, Pearl, 9ct gold and hairwork

  

This antique Victorian mourning ring is exceptionally beautiful and perfect to add to your mourning jewellery collection. It is very well crafted, made from 9ct yellow gold with brown plaited hair running through the centre of the band, revealed in cut out sections with delicately engraved designs.

The face of the ring is finished in a rich inky black enamel and set with tiny seed pearls in an almost buckle design. Black enamel in mourning jewellery was said to represent death and seed pearls or pearls were said to represent tears. The buckle motif symbolised amongst other things holding someone near. This is a very sentimental and beautifully designed mourning piece. Fully hallmarked for 9ct gold, Chester Assay office, 1892.

MM size 17.7 mm. Weight approx 2.13 grams. Approx 7.1mm face and 4.2mm band width. Good used condition overall, surface wear commensurate with age and use. It does not come boxed, any boxes shown in images are props only and not included.
