No monarch ever granted these characters the trust accorded to them by Caterina de'Medici, the Italian princess who, at the age of fourteen, married a contemporary: Henry of Valois, future king of France. Nostradamus, when asked about her, had given her an apparently comforting answer: each of her three children would occupy a throne.

Catherine, saddened and worried, plunged more than ever into her magic: no longer satisfied with the horoscopes that the astrologers compiled for her, she wanted to see with her own eyes the events that destiny reserved for her.
