This is a wonderful 18ct yellow gold mourning ring from the George III period. The band of the ring features 3 black enamel layers, the middle of which features the words Francis Neale OB: 13 DEC 1806 AE: 56. AET is the abbreviation of Latin aetatis, genitive singular of aetas age, meaning Francis Neale deceased in 1806 at the age of 56. The inside of the ring is engraved with the words S. Neale died 18 Mar 1836 aged 83 years.

Neale was most likely Francis Neale wife and the original owner of the ring and when she passed away it was inscribed inside with her details. 83 is an extremely impressive age for someone to reach in the early 1800s, signifying that this was most likely a wealthy family.

This is a fine example of a Georgian memorial ring and a great piece of history.
