Shield Mourning Ring Victorian Era Antique Black Enamel 14k Gold Band NO HAIR

  

This unusual Victorian era mourning ring features a small shield accented by black enameling, set in a wide band that would have once contained the plaited hair of a loved one. The ring tests about 14k gold and it is not marked, but probably dates from the later part of the 19th century. There is resident on the band where the hair would have been contained, possibly from glue. The ring is otherwise in good condition with wear commensurate with age. It appears to have been sized down at some point, but further sizing would be difficult due to the shape of the band and in order to preserve an intricate pattern on the top and bottom sides of the band.

The ring measures about 3.6mm wide and weighs 1.7g. It is a size 6.5.
