These rings were created as a way to commemorate and mourn the loss of a loved one who had passed away.

Mourning jewellery was quite prevalent during this time and took on various forms, including rings, lockets, brooches, and bracelets. The Victorian era lasted from 1837 to 1901 and was named after Queen Victoria of England. During this period, mourning rituals were significant, and people often wore mourning jewellery as a way to remember deceased family members or friends.

The use of black enamel was common in mourning jewellery. The black colour symbolised death and mourning, expressing the wearer's grief and remembrance of the deceased.

They were often customised with the name, initials, or a significant symbol associated with the deceased. In this case, the cartouche has a cross symbol inside it, which carries religious significance and represents faith, hope, and eternal life. The combination of these elements signifies the purpose and sentiment behind this particular Victorian mourning ring. It's essential to note that these pieces hold historical and sentimental value and are often considered collectors' items today.
